We (Andy, Alicia and I) just returned from a trip to Gateway National Recreation Area in NY and NJ. This park has three areas, one near JFK Airport in NY, one on Staten Island, NY, and one that consists of Sandy Hook, NJ. This is definitively the most developed and urban park we have visited thus far. All three areas contain numerous forts and batteries and contain significant cultural resources. It was interesting to see such an urban coastal area! We were surprised at the amount of trash that was on many of the park beaches (see photos). It appears that much of the “Jamaica Bay” (JFK) region will likely be impacted severely by SL rise.

Just returned from a great visit to Cumberland Island National Seashore with fellow PSDS research scientist Adam Griffith, and WCU students Alicia Fowler and Ryan Nelsen. Cumberland Island is the largest and most southern barrier island in GA. This dynamic environment contains wide beaches, high sand dunes, dense maritime forest, and expansive marshes.

Cumberland also had a rich history of human habitation before its designation as a national seashore, ranging form early native peoples, Spanish settlement, to ownership by Revolutionary War Hero Nathaniel Greene and the famous Carnegie family.

We also noticed a severe erosion problem at the southern end of Ocean Beach, which is moving alarmingly close to the Great Highway.
